The Mamie George Community Center (MGCC), a program of Catholic Charities serving Fort Bend County, is assisting people in need after the recent floods. As first responders serve meals and provide shelter, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is providing food and financial assistance and preparing to provide long-term case management to assist families over the next years rebuild their lives. The group is asking for cash donations to help meet those needs.
“While the exact role and services will vary and be unique to each individual, we focus on filling gaps in existing services, primarily for the most vulnerable populations and those with the greatest needs,” said Beth Zarate, MGCC Executive Director.
At this time, Catholic Charities is working with the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management, United Way, Red Cross, Fort Bend County Social Services, and a number of local non-profits and churches to coordinate relief efforts. Damages are being assessed, and preparations for the recovery phase of the disaster have begun.
“Catholic Charities’ true gift is getting the help to the people who need it the most in the initial stages and then sticking around for the long haul when people are trying to rebuild their lives,” said Catholic Charities CEO Cynthia Colbert. “FEMA will offer some individual assistance to those that suffered damages. Donations from individuals and grants from corporations and foundations will be the driving force to making sure those that really need help will get it.”
“We work all year to prepare for situations like this, and we feel ready to respond,” Zarate said. “We know from past experience that people are grateful for whatever assistance is available.”
