Refugee Resettlement

Refugee Resettlement
Division: Immigration and Refugee Services

About Refugee Resettlement

History of Program/How Long In Existence

This program was established in 1975 as an affirmation of the
Catholic Church’s response to welcome the sojourner and meet the needs of refugees and immigrants.  A Parish Partnership Program (PPP) was established to provide support to refugee families who need assistance, by matching the parish’s gifts to the specific needs of a family.

Services Provided

The program assists refugees with all aspects of resettlement and ensures that they are offered appropriate assistance.  Services include: apartment location and assistance; reception of refugee families at airport; orientation; assistance with Medicaid and Social Security certification; transportation assistance; coordination of school enrollment for children; health checkups; financial assistance; after school literacy and skills training services and job development, placement, maintenance and career laddering assistance.  The ultimate goal is that refugees achieve self-sufficiency through employment.

Refugee Resettlement also offers a program to
strengthen refugee families and marriages.

Eligibility Criteria (Age, etc.)

A refugee is someone who has fled his or her country because he/she fears persecution based on race, religion, nationality, participation in a particular social group, or political opinion. The definition is sometimes expanded to include people fleeing war or other armed conflict.  Individuals must be approved by the federal government to come to the United States as a refugee and be assigned to our diocese by the United Conference of Catholic Bishops Migration and Refugee Services, our national voluntary agency.

A donation of as little as $10 per month can produce an incredible impact on the life of a refugee family.

You make a difference in the lives of our refugee families through your in kind donations as well. The value of each in-kind gift to Refugee Resettlement is matched by a 2:1 cash contrbution, doubling the impact of your thoughtful donation.

($3,500)

Give us  the ability to furnish households for 3 families
($2,000)

Help families with emergency cash assistance
($1,000)

Give a family peace of mind, knowing their rent will be paid as they strive for self -sufficiency
($650)

Send a refugee child to summer camp where they learn about American culture while experiencing the naivete of
childhood like they might not have had
the oportunity to before.
($250)

Gives a family of 4 a fully stocked pantry upon their arrival to their new home.
($100)

None of the things that we are able to do for refugee families would be possible without the help and support of people like you. Please give, so that
we might continue to give refugee's the bulding blocks they need
to start laying their own foundations here in the
Houston-Galveston area.

Volunteer Opportunities (special projects)

Volunteers are needed year-round to visit refugee families and support them during their period of transition with in-kind goods and services. We need literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers for refugees, volunteers to provide cooking classes, orientation classes, supermarket tours, and volunteers to work in our after school program mentoring refugee youth.
