Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents

Services Provided

The program provides the following: prenatal and postpartum care through collaboration with St. Joseph Hospital Women and Children’s Clinic and Doctor’s Hospital; comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment to assess the following needs: medical, nutritional, familial, emotional, vocation/educational, parental knowledge and skills, psychological, legal and financial; on-going individual, family, and group counseling regarding the pregnancy; monthly support groups; quarterly social enrichment activities; monthly in-home education on prenatal, life skills, and parenting issues; in-home aftercare up to 1 year after the birth of the child; and appropriate referrals to other health and social services as required. The SPPA staff works to ensure the births of healthy babies to healthy moms while working to establish self-sufficiency for all program clients. Participants can earn points to obtain needed baby items.  

Eligibility Criteria

Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents and Young Adults, ages 25 and under and their infants, birth fathers and their respective parents, or family support system.

Service Area/ Location

Social services are provided in the home and at the office at 2900 Louisiana. Medical services are provided at St. Joseph Women and Children Clinic located at the corner of St. Joseph Parkway and Crawford and Doctor’s Hospital located at 233 West Parker Road. Clients eligible may live in Harris and surrounding counties.

Fees

Clients will receive assistance in applying for Medicaid.
There is no cost for clients eligible for Medicaid or who have private insurance.

Staff

Direct services are provided by licensed social work professionals.

Volunteer Opportunities (Special Projects)

The program welcomes baby showers by groups to obtain items for the mothers and infants. These items are acquired by the clients through a motivational point reward system. Assistance with special events such as holiday parties and monthly support group.

History of Program/How Long in Existence

This program has provided comprehensive medical and social services to pregnant and parenting adolescents for over 55 years. For over 4 decades, we have collaborated with St. Joseph Hospital to provide a comprehensive medical program.
