Select Catholic Charities staff from the Access & Eligibility, Basic Needs, Cabrini Center, Counseling and Senior Services departments are now working at the center, helping to improve access to services. The 55,000-square-foot center provides medical, wellness and social services to the underserved and uninsured in our community and is a collaboration between Catholic Charities, San Jose Clinic and CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare.</p> <p> <strong>Mamie George Community Center<br> in Fort Bend is taking shape</strong><br> <strong><img align="right" alt="Mamie Center" border="0" height="107" src="http://www.bullpenmarketing.com/CatholicCharities/MamieCtr.jpg" width="200" /></strong>The roof and walls are now on our new center, which is scheduled for completion in late 2010. The Mamie George Community Center and other Catholic Charities sites will provide much needed services to Fort Bend County's low income residents, particularly seniors. The center will support service delivery to an average of 400 people per day. <a href="/Mamie-George-Center-Under-Construction/">More info </a></p> <p> <strong><img align="left" alt="St. Michael's" border="0" height="140" src="http://www.bullpenmarketing.com/CatholicCharities/St_Michaels.jpg" width="140" />New St. Michael's Home for Children opens</strong><br> Three of our St. Michael's Homes for Children have been consolidated into one 32-bed facility in North Houston. The program serves unaccompanied minors in immigration legal proceedings, providing medical, case management, counseling and legal services in a safe and nurturing setting. The baskets brought many smiles to those served by our Refugee Resettlement program, St. Michael's Homes for Children, AIDS Ministry and Transitional Housing program for women and children.</p> <p> <strong><img align="left" alt="Easter" border="0" height="120" src="http://www.bullpenmarketing.com/CatholicCharities/YoungPro.jpg" width="160" />Young Professionals for Catholic Charities hosts event for women and children in Transitional Housing program</strong><br> The weekend before Easter, Catholic Charities' young donor society hosted an Easter egg hunt for 36 women and children at our transitional home, providing a picnic lunch, craft activities and baskets filled with treats for the boys and girls, and toiletries for the women. The inspiring group led sports clinics and other recreation activities for youth living in our St. Michaelâ€™s Homes for Children, and helped sort and package household necessities for our refugee resettlement families. Their week of service culminated with a fun-packed field day for the St. Michaelâ€™s children. Roach Award. Monsignor John J. Roach founded Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in 1943 and the award salutes his giving spirit. The award was presented at Catholic Charities' 2010 Spirit of Charity gala, honoring Cardinal DiNardo for his tremendous commitment to the charity and the people it serves. Pat and Gene Reed served as gala chairs and Ginny and Dennis Malloy served as honorary chairs. Select Catholic Charities staff from the Access & Eligibility, Basic Needs, Cabrini Center, Counseling and Senior Services departments are now working at the center, helping to improve access to services. The 55,000-square-foot center provides medical, wellness and social services to the underserved and uninsured in our community and is a collaboration between Catholic Charities, San Jose Clinic and CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare.</p> <p> <strong>Mamie George Community Center<br> in Fort Bend is taking shape</strong><br> <strong><img align="right" alt="Mamie Center" border="0" height="107" src="http://www.bullpenmarketing.com/CatholicCharities/MamieCtr.jpg" width="200" /></strong>The roof and walls are now on our new center, which is scheduled for completion in late 2010. When she does, she can't wait to get back to doing what she loves: being a companion for "Miss Miller" sitting with her; reading the Bible to her; fixing breakfast for her; and even helping her with bathing. </p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">On a recent "day off," Mollie received a call from "Miss Miller," saying she was lonesome. Mollie assured her someone else would be there with her, but she replied, "I don't care who comes, I want to see you."</p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">Mollie is grateful to have a reason to get out of the house every day. She had triple bypass surgery seven years ago and back surgery four years ago. However, he always found her and told her that he would have her deported, never allowing her to see her children again. </p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">With the help of her employer, Esperanza came to Catholic Charities to find out if she might be eligible for citizenship. The staff of Catholic Charities' Cabrini Center for Legal Assistance began reviewing her case while also referring her to a Catholic Charities' family counselor. </p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">After intensive counseling, Esperanza was finally able to tell her story. She explained to the Cabrini staff that before she met her husband, she already had a son due to a sexual assault in her own country. </p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">After learning about the long history of abuse the staff decided to file a petition under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). In cases of abuse, VAWA protects undocumented victims of domestic violence who are terrorized by their husbands or partners. </p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">A couple of months after submitting her petition, Esperanza received her first legal document - her employment authorization card.</p> <p align="left"></p> <p align="left">Soon after, she received a social security card and drivers' license and quickly got a second job. </p> <p align="left">Esperanza was scheduled for her final interview to determine residency.
