New Volunteer Certification Program to help Fort Bend County seniors

Catholic Charities has been serving seniors for over 20 years. Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers of all ages, denominations and backgrounds to help fill a need in the senior community. This first-of-its-kind training program will educate and train volunteers to understand case management with seniors.

“Many seniors want to stay and live independently in their own homes,” said Ester Valladares clinical coordinator at Catholic Charities. Valladares further went on to explain how seniors living on a fixed incomes often make the difficult decision of whether or not to purchase their medication or pay for food and utilities.

“For many seniors, daily living can become difficult,” she said. In addition to finances, Valladares added the physical weakness of a senior often hinders their ability to care for their own household making daily chores almost impossible.

Georgia is an example of one of many seniors living independently. At 84 years old Georgia is able to enjoy living on her own with the help of volunteers. After losing her husband to Alzheimer’s two years ago, Georgia says receiving counseling and help with groceries and yard work from volunteers makes her life easier.

The informational meeting will be held at 9:30 am, August 8, 2008 at St. Lawrence Parish located at 3100 Sweetwater Boulevard in Sugar Land. Training will include in-class education as well as home visits with Case Managers. Volunteers will be certified to make a meaningful difference for the local senior community.

Give Hope This Christmas Become An Angel Sponsor

Poverty never takes a holiday. Somewhere in our community this Christmas, there is a child who is hungry, a breadwinner out of a job, or an elderly person in need of a helping hand.

This year Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston asks that you “Share Your Blessings” and become an Angel Sponsor. Catholic Charities has identified more than 4,500 clients in need of the most basic items such as food, clothing, grocery gift cards, personal hygiene items, household items and toys.

Angel Sponsors have the option of choosing to sponsor an individual or family or make a financial contribution. Angels wanting to sponsor an individual or family should fill out an Angel Sponsor form and return it to Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities will then send Angel Sponsors a client wish list.

Angel Sponsors simply wanting to give a small gift for general distribution can also drop off items during Catholic Charities Drop-off Day scheduled for Tuesday, November 27, 2007 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
